S.O.S Save Our Statues campaign has recently been launched.

S.O.S. Save Our Statues. It’s time to protect our culture and Save Our Statues! It is the responsibility of every sculptor to unearth within his block of stone a soul, and task himself to bring it to life: for a statue represents a journey – a step forward in the evolution of mankind, and like a history book it illuminates humanities achievements and accomplishments, its mistakes and blunders.  Why else do we flock to Rome and Athens to physically witness and experience depictions of the past?  What explanation is there for former Soviet countries to display effigies of Communist leaders responsible for persecution and oppression?

On the completion of a statue the artist has unveiled a reality of his age; it enables us to appreciate the softness of the curves or the harshness of an expression and the sadness of the eyes or the nobility of the countenance and demeanour of shoulders, or its beauty or malevolence. Frozen in time a statue expresses a reality. The comprehension of such reality is subjective, but it must be understood in its historical context.

Western Culture is Under Threat: Our Statues Represent Our Past

The defaced statue of Winston Churchill. Even our national heroes are under threat!

Defaced, censored or removed is the new fashion in which to undermine Western culture. We humans represent a unique ability to harness the mysterious process called life!  Its meaning often eludes us, but nonetheless we try and navigate and embrace, and clinch it – in essence we try and interpret it as much as a human can. To debate the future of our past is folly, we simply can not eradicate our past achievements; positive or otherwise.

Athens – where I’m currently writing this article – is different.  It seeks to protect its history, knowing that it cannot and should not be erased.  All around me are the timeless artefacts of Greek culture and as I wander around this awesome city I feel like I’m roaming through the pages of a history book.  The same can be said of London and Paris and various other cities.  But for how long?  When will the mediators of acceptability intercede in what art is acceptable?  The S.O.S Save Our Statues campaign has been created to protect our past.

Toppled Statue. We need to fight back.

S.O.S Protect our Statues: Fight to Keep Them!

It is with a heavy heart as I watch from afar the eradication of Western culture.  But the fight for preserving our past has commenced.  Save Our Statues UK has launched an initiative to protect our history and culture from eradication.  Please take a look at their website and sign their petitions.  This monstrous infringement of Western culture must stop!  The Save Our Statues movement should be supported, so please do your bit.
